Students choose one or more colors to reflect on and write about. The coloring poem printable has two pages: a brainstorming sheet and a writing template.

Thinking Sheet

Using the thinking sheet, students choose a color they want to write about and how that color appears in their lives. Do they see that it is white? How can red “noise” be? What words make you think of blue?

Writing Page

Once the students have discussed, they can transfer their ideas to their poems. Students can use this template to write that important first draft, then transition their poem (with editing) into the final product.

How to Use the Coloring Poem Worksheets

Print, copy, write, and go! These poetry worksheets are great for:

  • To introduce students to writing poetry.
  • To challenge students to write about something they know in new and different ways.
  • Teaching students the writing process, from discussion to publication.
  • Find out what happens when all students are assigned the same color. Who knew so many poems could be written in teal or midnight blue!
  • Creating a back-to-school or holiday bulletin board with poems about crayon colors, eg, red and pink for Valentine’s Day or green for St. Patrick.
  • Teaching primary and secondary color students in the art classroom. Students can incorporate what they know about their colors into their poems.

Why Teachers Love Coloring Poem Worksheets

With a combination of visuals and writing, these printable worksheets are easy to grade for all abilities and grade levels. Sentence structure on the writing page is especially useful for multilingual students.

Why Students Like Colorful Poems

Students are supported through the discussion and writing process so that they can let their creativity run wild. When students leave, it’s fun to see what they bring with them. Can they create a poem for every color of the rainbow?
