Shakur Stevenson says Keyshawn Davis and Richardson Hitchins will dominate the Welterweight division

Shakur Stevenson has angered fans with a social media post predicting that Keyshawn Davis and Richardson Hitchins will be the best two in boxing. Many fans quickly turned their attention elsewhere, questioning why so many elite fighters receive this label long before facing the division’s top contenders.

“The key and Af [Hitchins] the best fighters at 47 if I’m being honest and it’s crazy cause they the 2 that came up w me.. And this is an unproven statement, but argue w yo momma time gone tell just come back to this post in 3 to 4 years, and they went to fight each other!! #HIM 👑,” Stevenson wrote on X.

Shakur admitted that he is looking forward to the future, but his comments are still critical because no striker has achieved much in this category. Keyshawn has yet to compete at 147 pounds. He is in contention for a title shot against WBO champion Devin Haney even though he has never campaigned at that weight. Hitchins made his debut there last weekend, defeating Ricardo Salas in a match that left many viewers wanting more action.

His belief is irrational. The current welterweight division lacks a dominant figure, which creates an opportunity for new faces to rise in the next few years. Both Keyshawn and Hitchin have the talent to challenge for world titles if they continue to improve.

More troubling is boxing’s tendency to price fights before they test themselves against the best opponents. Many viewers have grown tired of watching champions and contenders call themselves the best boxers while meaningful encounters are impossible.

Stevenson met with similar criticism. Some fans have already placed him at the top of the light welterweight division after one appearance at 140 pounds. However several dangerous names remain outside his resume, including Ernesto Mercado and Gary Antoine Russell. If his friendship with Hitchin influences him to do the same in the future, that competition may not happen.

Time may prove Shakur right. Keyshawn and Hitchins have the ability to reach the top at 147. Most fans, however, are less interested in predictions than in seeing top fighters settle those claims inside the ring against each other. Until that happens, announcements about who dominates the weight class will continue to receive eye rolls instead of respect.
