The New York Times was called out on social media for its article on the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Saturday.

A New York Times article about Khamenei’s death reads, “Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Hardline Cleric Who Made Iran a Regional Power, Dies at 86.” The Times also described the supreme leader as “good-hearted and kind” in his obituary.

“With his glasses, Palestinian kaffiyeh, long robes and silver beard, Ayatollah Khamenei posed as a theologian as well as a writer and translator of Islamic books. He touched the austerity and grandeur, running the country from the vantage point of everyday politics,” the NYT said.

This clip was met with consolation on social media from politicians and experts.

Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Montana, responded and offered his own version of the article.

Others responded to the New York Times article by pointing out that Khamenei is responsible for killing thousands. The Times report includes reporting on his regime ordering the death of protesters who spoke ill of the government in January, and in 2022.

Marc Thiessen, a columnist for the Washington Post, wrote in response to the Times article, “You can’t make up your mind.”

Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch responded to the headline “peaceful majority,” a reference to CNN’s coverage of the Kenosha protests in 2020, where the network displayed a chyron that read, “PROTESTS FIERY BUT VERY QUIET AFTER POLICE SHOOTING.”

“You don’t have enough media,” wrote Batya Ungar-Sargon of News Nation.

“The NYT is trash,” said Jason Bedrick of the Heritage Foundation in response to the article.

The Times responded to some criticism of the post on X.

“The funerals of the Times report and show the lives in full, clarifying why, in our judgment, they were important. We include fairly and accurately the news information of each life and death, and we do not manage them dishonestly to get points as you are trying to do here,” the communication team wrote in X in response to the Libs account of TikTok account title criticism.

The Washington Post also faced backlash for describing Khamenei as “avuncular” and “with an easy smile.”

“With his gleaming white beard and easy smile, Ayatollah Khamenei cut a much louder public figure than his always-scornful but highly respected mentor, and was known to love Persian poetry and classic Western novels, especially Victor Hugo’s ‘Les Misérables.’ But like Khomeini’s hardliners, he opposes the allies’ efforts to promote political and social reform within the country and to establish relations with the United States,” the Post reported of the senior leader.
