A pilot has gone viral after leaving an unexpected message in the sky during a routine flight.

The pilot of a two-hour maintenance test flight over North West England followed the words “I’m lonely” in the sky, with a strange message and route from the flight tracking website Flightradar24.

The Ravenair Piper Tomahawk plane took off from Liverpool at around 11:30am on Saturday. It spent nearly two hours flying over the Wirral peninsula, Cheshire and North Wales before returning safely, according to Flightradar24.

Screenshots of the strange flight path quickly went viral on social media.

Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel industry expert and author of the “View From the Wing” blog, told Fox News Digital that there’s no reason to worry, in his opinion, since the plane is designed for sightseeing rather than passenger transport.

“This was a test flight, not a passenger flight,” Leff said. “Writing ‘I’m bored’ takes a certain skill – and suggests that the pilot was not distracted.”

Leff noted that the hardest work for pilots often occurs before takeoff, during takeoff and landing.

“Only a small amount of flying in modern aircraft is done manually on the go,” he said. “The load above 10,000 meters is much less than during the take-off and landing phase.”

Leff added, “‘I’m lonely’ is a funny way to put it.”

The airline, Ravenair, told the BBC that a flight instructor in his 20s was conducting a test flight after another part of the plane was fitted.

“I think the pilot was bored because it was a test flight. Mind you, it was good flying,” Wes Barrett, operations manager, told the media.

“He was bored, but maybe he had to concentrate a lot at the end to make the words clear,” he added.

The flight path quickly went viral, prompting discussions on social media.

Experts say that spelling a pilot-like message requires precision and shows that the pilot remains focused throughout the flight. (Dushlik/iStock)

“This should be rare… but it’s nice to see the pilot didn’t get into trouble because of this,” one Reddit user wrote.

Others recommend the precision required to get the message out.
