A Mississippi teenager knew the elderly couple he is accused of murdering before getting into trouble with law enforcement, according to new court testimony.
Officials say Cordarius Hobbs, 17, killed Billy Blair, 74, and his wife Virginia Carol Blair, 71, during a June 3 home burglary in Mendenhall, Mississippi. Hobbs family members testified during Thursday’s hearing that Hobbs knew the couple.
Family members testified that Hobbs had been working for the Blairs doing things like cleaning the house before the alleged shooting, according to WAPT. Billy Newsome, Hobbs’ grandfather, said he believes his grandson was called to work on the day of the alleged shooting but believes he is innocent.
“My grandson was working for a man, why do you go and pay money to the man you work for,” said Newsome. “Why did you go there for such a long time and you know the police over there, then you go and wait for everyone to come to run away, it doesn’t fit, something is not here.”

On June 3, three contractors installing a generator at the Blairs’ home found Carol Blair’s car door open and several guns in the seats around 10 a.m., prompting them to call the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department for a welfare check at 11:30 a.m., according to a Mississippi Bureau of Investigation investigator.

At noon, the investigator said the police arrived and found a bullet aimed at them, and a standoff began that lasted for about two hours. Hobbs was caught after trying to run from the police, the official said, adding that the teenager was unarmed when he was caught.
Carol Blair was found in a bedroom curled up in a baby position and with three gunshot wounds to the back of her head. Bill Blair was found lying on his back in the kitchen with three gunshot wounds to the face.

A federal investigator said three guns and 280 rounds of ammunition were found in the house, belonging to Bill Blair.
Hobbs’ attorney, Zachary Vaugh, said there was no direct forensic evidence linking the teenager to the shooting.
“There was no one who said he was the target, he was the one who fired the bullet in these things,” said Vaugh. “One of the only things is, one of the victims was shot twice on one side of the head and on the other. I think that forces someone else to be there. There are so many things that could have happened, so many things.”

“If you have a police officer who says there is no one to point to when the shooting happened, I don’t see how that makes sense,” he said.
Hobbs faces two counts of first degree murder and one count of burglary, in addition to 10 other counts. You are denied responsibility.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the couple’s family previously said, “We are heartbroken, hurt, and heartbroken, but we are not alone.”

Jason Busby, who was a friend of the couple, remembered them as extremely self-sacrificing when he spoke to WLBT.
“This man would give you the shirt off his back, his wife is the same, and they’re just great people. It’s just sad,” said Busby. “Everybody here is still in shock. They were just good people.”
