Geno Auriemma made some incredibly stupid comments about Caitlin Clark, but the WNBA says the girls will love them.

It’s been almost two weeks since Alyssa Thomas pushed Clark to the ground and did everything but choke him and use the hide mat, and the conversation is as fiery as ever. Naturally, the whole thing has turned into a conversation about Thomas getting hate on the internet, because that’s how these things go in 2026.

As for Clark … him still he hasn’t played since that game, though rumor has it he’ll be back in the lineup as soon as tonight against the Los Angeles Sparks.
Auriemma continued “Sports Media Podcast with Richard Deitsch” discussing all things basketball, including, of course, Caitlin Clark.
And gave a couple SCORCHING takes.

“This was not his creation,” Auriemma said. “It was created by all the Americans who were deluded into thinking that one player who wasn’t Wemby was going to come in and change the league. It was that storm that said, ‘This is Jesus coming down to save the WNBA.’
“Now, maybe there’s been a change in terms of how much attention is paid. Yes. How important is the league? Yes. But it’s not the same when Tiger [Woods] entered the PGA Tour. He changed the PGA Tour forever. Why? Well, there was a lot of money that came into the PGA Tour, but more than that, he won every tournament. So that’s a big difference. “

Geno Auriemma is completely wrong here. I’m not sure he’s ever been more wrong in his life.
Pat Summitt famously described him as “a smart-ass– who can be bad without being noticed,” and I think you hit the nail on the head.
Caitlin Clark is 100% the Tiger Woods of the WNBA. Actually, he’s the Larry Bird of the WNBA, but we’ll go with Tiger right now because that’s what Geno used.
Auriemma uses money as the reason why he is not Tiger laughs. The WNBA was broken before Caitlin Clark entered the league. It was not profitable, at all. It would bleed money every year, and it was held together by the NBA.
No one is watching. No one went. No one talked about the WNBA pre-Caitlin Clark. Believe me, I have been in the business for a long time. It was an afterthought.

Then Clark came in as this legendary player from Iowa, and everything changed. People came. People are watching. People paid money to see Caitlin Clark.
That is not my opinion. Those are the facts.
Before Clark entered the league as a rookie in 2024, there had been only one WNBA game in 15 years with more than 1 million viewers. One. Sparks-Mercury match back in 2008.
From Clark’s arrival, there was at least 59 games with more than a million viewers. In his first season at Indiana, Fever alone had 21.
Do you understand how crazy those numbers are? It’s all because of Caitlin Clark. Tiger Woods had a similar impact on the game of golf, the only difference being, the game was immortal when he won at Augusta in 1997. He just got cold again. Really, really, indeed it’s cool.

Now, Tiger won and Caitlin Clark didn’t. Geno said that, and he’s right. Basketball is a team sport and golf is more about the individual, so I’m not sure the comparison works. But, I won’t argue with you. He can have that one, I guess?
However, I would argue that its part of the money. The pre-CBA CBA expired after last season. The post-CBA increased the team’s payroll by about $6 million, raising the top salary from about $249k to $1.4 million, while the average player’s salary is about $1. four times.
Four times more.
There are now chartered flights for every team in the league. It wasn’t like that before Caitlin Clark, as silly as that sounds.
Now, why do you think the post-CBA CBA looks so different than the pre-CBA CBA, Geno?
Because Caitlin Clark came into the league and made it stand out. He made a profit. That’s why the entire league absolutely hates him and tries to hurt him every other game is inexplicable.
These girls got rich. He gave them life. And all they do is try to crush him.
According to Auriemma, however, that’s par for the course.
“And instead of Caitlin Clark getting hurt badly … no s—, all the first round picks got hurt badly,” he added. “Not all fouls have a good full. Not all fouls have a bad full, but there are glaring faults. But that’s all. It’s not a poll in America, which is all bad.”
Yes. Nothing to see here. Normal stuff, Geno!
