Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, faced criticism over the Fourth of July weekend after she reportedly traveled to Mallorca, Spain, to return to an Islamic “spiritual life” while New York and the rest of the country celebrated America’s 250th anniversary.
The New York Post reported that Duwaji was spotted Monday at Newark International Airport before boarding a flight to Palma and heading to a sold-out retreat run by The Women Sanctuary.
“There’s nothing ‘America 250’ like skipping the celebration and going on a Mediterranean vacation, but I’m not surprised because he’s made his hatred for America very clear,” Councilwoman Joann Ariola, R-Queens, told The Post.

Councilman Frank Morano, R-Staten Island, also criticized Duwaji’s absence during the semi-centennial celebration, saying family members of officials can make the trip but must see the significance of the milestone.
“It is disappointing that the First Lady has chosen to be overseas instead of participating in a major event that will celebrate our city and our country this year,” Morano told The Post.
Morano said that the issue is not whether Duwaji was allowed to leave, but that he should have appeared in the city’s events during the 250th anniversary celebrations.
“No one is saying elected officials and their families can’t take vacations, but this was a time to show off to the city and the country, and you missed it,” Morano said.

Fox News Digital reached out to the mayor’s office for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
Mamdani’s office told The Post that Duwaji was not traveling with officers assigned to the NYPD’s taxpayer-funded intelligence.
Conservative commentator Arynne Wexler posted photos of Duwaji at a United Airlines gate and criticized the timing of the trip.
“It’s funny that when @ZohranKMamdani told New Yorkers to turn down the AC his wife Rama Duwaji was on a plane to a party in Mallorca,” Wexler told X, according to The Post.

The Women Sanctuary website lists the event, “Plants Of The Quran | 6th Edition,” as a sold-out retreat, among other sold-out events. A separate reverse page describes the Mallorca program as it focuses on plants mentioned in the Quran, including olives, pomegranates, dates and figs, and workshops, food and spiritual meditation.
Mamdani stayed in New York City during the heatwave and the city’s America 250 events. His office said on July 1 the city is expanding cooling facilities, extending pool hours and asking businesses and New Yorkers to set their thermostats to 78 degrees during peak demand.
