Although Sánchez was the defending champion, many favored Gómez. The Puerto Rican Knockout had already defeated Mexican legend Carlos Zárate and was expected to carry his devastating power up to featherweight. Instead, Sánchez presented how he defines his work.

The battle broke out quickly. Round 1 produced one of the biggest surprises in championship history. Less than 40 seconds into the bout, Sánchez caught an advancing Gómez with a well-timed left hook followed by a crushing right hand that sent the striker crashing to the canvas. Gómez hit the count, but Sánchez stayed poised and nearly struck another bell before the bell with sharp counter features exposed the Puerto Rican’s ruthless style. By the end of the round, swelling had already started in Gómez’s right eye.

Gómez tried to respond in Round 2, landing heavy combinations, but Sánchez kept answering and countering before he settled down.

Sánchez refused to get involved in the controversy. Using excellent footwork, subtle head movement and counter-pointing, he hit Gómez repeatedly while forcing his challenger to pay for every mistake.

The middle rounds showed why Sánchez is considered one of the best featherweights in history.

Between rounds 3 and 7, Gómez continued to fight with great determination, landing the occasional solid combination whenever he was able to trap Sánchez on the ropes. His best moment came in the seventh when a right-left combination briefly lifted Sánchez to his feet and reminded everyone of his fearsome power.

However, those times were surpassed by Sánchez’s accuracy.

The Mexican champion systematically attacked the swelling around Gómez’s right eye, which was almost closed in the later rounds. He mixed straight rights, left hooks and cool combinations while slipping many of Gómez’s big punches. As the punishment escalated, Gómez’s nose bled profusely, both eyes swelled badly, and a broken cheek bone further limited his vision.

Although Gómez did not stop trying to press the action, Sánchez called for speed during the high quality, defense and normality of the ring.

Seeing his opponent’s vision in grave danger, Sánchez ducked before drilling Gómez with a right that left him staggering to the ropes. Sensing the end, the champion unleashed a flurry of punches that dropped Gómez for the second time. The Puerto Rican rose to his feet, but referee Carlos Padilla waved off the contest at 2:09 of the eighth round, giving Sánchez a knockout victory and a successful defense of his sixth WBC featherweight title.

The victory elevated Sánchez from champion to Mexican sports icon. Many saw the bout as redemption for Gómez’s victory over Carlos Zárate two years ago, and cemented Sánchez’s reputation as one of boxing’s all-time greats.

Sadly, his reign would be short. Less than a year later, on August 12, 1982, Sánchez died in a car accident at the age of 23. His death ended what many believe would have been one of the greatest careers in boxing history.

For Gómez, the defeat marked his first career loss and stunned Puerto Rico, where he was considered unbeatable. Instead of defining him, however, the setback became part of his Hall of Fame legacy. Gómez also won world titles in three weight classes and later became close friends with the Sánchez family, often paying tribute to his former rival in the years following his death.

A replay was discussed before Sánchez’s death but never happened. More than four decades later, Sánchez-Gómez is still considered one of the greatest featherweight fights of all time, with both men putting on performances that helped define an era.
