The 4-4-2 holds the “forward” who will replace Rohl at Rangers

Glasgow Rangers coach Danny Rohl faces an uncertain future at the Scottish Premiership club due to interest from Austrian side RB Salzburg this week.

The Bundesliga side are in talks with the Scottish giants over a potential deal to hire the former Sheffield Wednesday tactician as their new manager, leaving the Gers in need of a new manager.

Rohl is reportedly not pushing to leave the club, and it is up to Salzburg to agree a deal with Rangers to tempt him into action.

The Light Blues chose to support the former coach of Bayern Munich and Germany at the end of the season, despite losing four out of five games after the break to finish third in the league and ten points behind first-placed Celtic.

Now, after being trusted by the manager after the end of the campaign, Rohl could leave Ibrox for Salzburg in the coming days.

Rangers are considering a run at the Premiership

Beating Falkirk 5-2 on the last day of the season when their place in the table was already guaranteed was the German manager’s only win after the break.

Now, the club are reportedly eyeing another successful Premiership manager Rohl and could come to boost the Scottish giants.

According to Sky Sports, Glasgow Rangers have already made a short list of potential replacements for Rohl if he completes his move to Salzburg in the coming days or weeks.

The report says that the coach of Hearts, Derek McInnes, is one of the managers who are expected to take the role if it opens up, which means that he may meet Lawrence Shankland.

Rangers recently signed the Scottish international from Jam Tarts on a permanent deal, after he scored 16 goals for McInnes in the Premiership this season.

Another update from journalist Pranav Shahaney suggests that it is McInnes who emerges as the “frontrunner” in the slot, ahead of the likes of Steven Gerrard.

How Derek McInnes could be the new Steven Gerrard for Rangers

If the Light Blues can convince McInnes to replace Rohl in the dugout in Glasgow, the Scottish specialist could arrive at the club as the next generation of Gerrard.

Rangers have not won the Premiership title since the English manager led the club to an unbeaten league season in the 2020/21 campaign, before leaving to join Aston Villa in October 2021.

The way McInnes has improved Hearts during his time at Tynecastle suggests he has the potential to have a Gerrard-like impact at Ibrox, helping them improve and challenge for titles again.

He arrived at Hearts in the summer of 2025 after picking up 52 points and they finished in the bottom half of the table in the 2024/25 campaign, leading them to a second place finish this season.

They came close to winning the Premiership title on the last day of last month, even taking the lead in that game against Celtic at Shankland, but they came up short.

Given the financial disparity between Hearts and the two Glasgow clubs, evidenced by a club record signing of less than £2m, McInnes leading them to second place was a remarkable achievement.

The 54-year-old manager has not only been praised in recent times, with former Gers striker Kyle Laffety saying in 2023 that he rates him “closer to Walter Smith” after their time together at Kilmarnock.

The comparison with the late Walter Smith, who won 10 Premiership titles as a manager, is highly commendable and shows the quality of his players.

McInnes may not have won the Premiership in his career, however, but he has a rich history of overachieving with teams in the division, finishing second with Aberdeen four times and finishing fourth with Kilmarnock two seasons after winning promotion to the Championship.

This 4-4-2 coach has been improving the teams he managed, as Gerrard did when he arrived at Ibrox and won the first title since returning to the top division, which is why he could be Gerrard’s next team.
