USA Today columnist says United States ‘already lost’ World Cup because of politics, Donald Trump

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially underway, with Canada, the United States, and Mexico jointly hosting the 48-team tournament.
As of Thursday afternoon, one game has been completed, the Mexican national team defeated South Africa 2-0 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. There are 103 matches to go, and the World Cup will be heading to amazing stadiums across the country.
But if you ask left-leaning sports media writers, the outcome is already decided. And the loser of this competition … United States. That’s right.

USA Today columnist Nancy Armor this week published one of the most ridiculous things about the World Cup and the country’s success in hosting the tournament. We argue that no matter how well the US Men’s National Team does in the event, we have proven ourselves to be a “hateful and greedy nation.”
“The U.S. men’s national team can make a deep run and the tournament can be filled with spectacular goals and exciting performances,” he wrote. “It will not change that we show that we are a hateful and greedy nation, where the leaders are only willing to accept the world as they want to see it rather than what it appears to be, and the love of the game is exploited for high money.
Instead of being independent, we chose to be “bad Americans,” he said.
“That will be the legacy, and the shame, of this World Cup. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to show the best of the United States and embrace the joy that soccer brings to the world. Instead, we chose to be bad Americans.”
What makes Americans “bad?” Yes, Donald Trump, of course!

Armor says the treatment of Iran’s National Team has been “disgraceful,” even though it is playing in the tournament, and has defended Somali referee Omar Artan who was denied entry to the country after allegations of links to terrorist groups. These are “questionable reasons,” he says. The US “should be a World Cup host, not a World Cup bouncer,” he adds.
“We work very closely to make sure that the right people come into our country,” President Trump said on Wednesday, speaking in a tone of anger. God does not allow it.
Another fatal flaw he reveals? Ticket prices. Except that the US government as the host country has nothing to do with the ticket prices, which are set by FIFA. Many complained that the high prices would leave out fans who could not afford them. And that’s a reasonable and understandable complaint. But again, that’s up to FIFA, not the host country.

That’s the problem with the whole Armor article. It is not based on facts, it is based on feelings and open hatred and disapproval of the country and its leadership. Would he have had the same complaints if the Biden administration had kept someone with ties to terrorists out of the country? Of course not. Or, frankly, the Biden administration wouldn’t even pretend to care about the integrity of America’s borders.

Not to mention that the last tournament in 2022 was hosted by Qatar, where migrant workers were exploited during the construction of the stadium. To his credit, Armor has criticized the Qatari government for its human rights record and other policies, but to compare the United States as Qatar’s host is completely absurd, and very unfair.

He approvingly quotes New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who as an advocate of open borders, criticized the Trump administration. Which gives the game away. Except that the Iranian National Team and the ref have allegedly dangerous connections, Armor would have written the same. Because he doesn’t like Donald Trump.
The US will be the surprise host of the World Cup, much to Armour’s chagrin. Don’t expect him to agree afterwards, that would require mental honesty.
