Trade Talks Are Beginning to Surround the NHL
Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Season joined the Sirius XM NHL Network Radio Power Play segment with Steve Kouleas and Craig Button. There, he was asked about the trade talks that are starting to fill up and the teams to watch this offseason.
Writing for NHLRumors.com
Steve Kouleas: “Craig brought something up when we were talking about GMs this summer. You can’t put your team back on the free agent market, I mean, you can’t, because it’s too expensive anyway.
Yes, we chewed a little fat about RFAs, but then we traded things like (JJ) Peterka, (Josh) Doan, (Michael) Kesselring last year, as we sit in early June with only one final game.

I mean, I wonder what Detroit will do. We’ve heard about other things, and Montreal takes it to the next level, and they have prospects and options today. Yes, what about the trade market in your mind?”
Dave Pagnotta: “Yeah, things are starting to heat up. Negotiations are starting to heat up, and usually that happens at the beginning of June. Everybody turns around and realizes that, uh, oh, we got the draft in 20-odd days, we should probably start work, and they’re doing all the internal work, all the testing stuff that’s in it, but now there’s nothing more than that.
Beyond that, but now they start doing their best, and look around the league, see who’s there, who’s who. What are the opportunity costs? Who might be available? Who would you like to listen to? This guy didn’t hang up on me today, so I can call him back and find out what’s going to happen to player X and player Y.
But yes, for sure. And groups look at the financial conditions of others, where they are financially. A lot of people are looking at the Buffalo side right now with their limited space, and twelve million dollars is still limited, whatever it is.”

More places to stay at the Buffalo Sabres:
Kouleas: “You’re not going to sign everybody for that amount of money. (Alex) Tuch, (Zach) Benson, (Michael) Kesselring, got a couple of guys, (Peyton) Krebs might be available.”
Pagnotta: “No and they might be able to sign two of these guys where they are right now.” So it will take, and who knows what Benson will look for if he wants it for a long time.
It doesn’t sound on Tuch’s part that Buffalo is overly interested in going higher than 10. Is it because we all know we’ve talked about this before, but (Adrian) Kempe’s deal, 10.6 somewhere between $10.5 to $11 million a year, and it didn’t sound like, or didn’t seem like they were going to get there.
Now, with the playoffs going on, there was little talk in Buffalo that they would get, but it doesn’t seem like Buffalo is interested in getting as much or more than the $10 million mark, which could lead Tuch to free agency. There’s still time, it’s less than a month, it’s 28 days, but they have to get it. So that’s one factor.
NHL Rumors: Sebastian Cossa, and Alex Tuch
On the Detroit Red Wings:
What we know is aggressive groups, looking to be aggressive. You mentioned Detroit. Detroit wants to be aggressive in adding forwards and strengthening their blue line even more.
For the New Jersey Devils:
New Jersey, we know their authority right now with Sunny Meta as GM, we have to compete, we’re going to the playoffs, we’re going to be a contender, so they have to adjust there. Can they find someone on the wing to play with Jack Hughes?
About the Vancouver Canucks:
Vancouver now has Ryan Johnson. Jake DeBrusk hasn’t changed his mind, as far as I know. He doesn’t want to be in a rebuild; he wants to go, and so on, and so on, and so on.
Expectations are rising for the Montreal Canadiens
More places to stay at the Montreal Canadiens:
So there is a lot to discuss. Much has been said. It’s growing now, and now that the Canadians are out, are they visiting again? I mean, we’ve known about Brendan Gallagher since the other day, but are they revisiting this big trade they had in jobs they can’t do, that Kent Hughes admitted to doing?”
