Sean Dyche opts for Crystal Palace job amid interest from West Brom and Burnley

Crystal Palace have received a boost in their pursuit of a long-term replacement for Oliver Glasner, but it also comes as potential bad news for West Brom and Burnley.

Palace beat Wolves on Sunday, but it was only their second win in 16 games in all competitions.

Fans were preparing their placards before the final whistle.

“Missed opportunities. Wrong board. Disrespected fans. Glasner is done.”

That was the message from inside Selhurst Park – directed not at the opposition, but at their manager, as the three points went into the bag.

It was a stark illustration of how far the relationship between Glasner and Royals has crumbled, and how little good remains in the man who, less than 12 months ago, was hailed as the club’s hero after delivering two stunning trophies.

The Austrian position has been deteriorating for weeks.

He surprised the audience with a press conference after the match against Zrinjski from Bosnia, where he appeared to all without throwing his hands up, admitting that he could not cope with the demands placed on his team this season.

Crystal Palace are now trying to lure the former Middlesbrough boss to replace Glasner after Parish’s U-turn.

The Eagles are believed to be willing to let their manager see out the season.

He could not replace those who left, he said. He could not integrate the new arrivals. Could not handle the program. It was a rare welcome from the incumbent manager, and one that has been echoing in the corridors of Selhurst Park ever since.

Discussions between Glasner and the board have taken place regarding his future, and the current understanding is that he will see out the remainder of the season before leaving at the end of his contract.

Steve Parish has decided, for now, not to pull the trigger early. But Palace is already making plans. Quietly, behind the scenes, the search for a new manager continues.

Palace have been linked with club legend Gareth Southgate, who has been unemployed since leaving England in 2024, and former Tottenham manager Thomas Frank.

Frank is said to be leading the charge against Palace, but there is another former Premier League manager who is keen to throw his hat into the ring.

Former Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche was sacked by Tricky Trees earlier this month and is seeking interest from West Brom and Burnley.

However, the specialist appears to be eyeing the Selhurst Park job.

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Dyche has expressed his interest in talking to Palace about replacing Glasner.

The 54-year-old’s reign at Forest lasted less than four months, and despite winning six of his 18 league games in charge, and recording a respectable win total, it was not enough to save his position after the slide.

Before Forest, Dyche spent two years at Everton, keeping them through back-to-back seasons when many thought they were doomed, and the Englishman was praised for his ‘amazing’ performance.

“I mean what he’s had to go through with two points being taken away and he’s been able to keep everyone together and he’s still got that spirit,” said Darren Fletcher of TNT Sports in 2024.

“He went through a period when they didn’t succeed, double figures didn’t succeed, and he has been able to keep them.

“I think it’s an admirable job he’s done based on everything that’s been thrown at him.

“And let’s not forget, the summer he had, he couldn’t do anything to strengthen the team to the level he wanted to reach, and he is still in charge of everything that was placed in his lap, he was able to keep this team in the Premier League comfortably.”

Dyche also won the Premiership with Burnley and kept them in the top flight for years, again on a shoestring budget.

It is understood he views the Palace role as a real opportunity to return to Premier League management and would welcome talks with the club.

However, while Dyche is on the list, he is currently nowhere near the top. The Palace has many options, and Frank is always the best.
