Vegas, Carolina handed conference trophies on the shoulder, but someone has to lose the Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup Finals are set after the Carolina Hurricanes eliminated the Montreal Canadiens in Game 5, and now they will face the Vegas Golden Knights.
But we have a problem: neither the Hurricanes nor the Golden Knights touched their conference championship trophies.
Guys… you can’t both win the trophy.
This superstition will fail man.

There’s a long tradition that you shouldn’t touch the conference championship trophy — the Prince of Wales Trophy for the Eastern Conference and the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl for the Western Conference — because it’s not a big prize. Stanley Cup Game.
Yes, there are many examples of teams not touching the Cup and then losing or taking the big cup of the conference cup that they won. But it’s strange about the Golden Knights and Hurricanes because they have similar records when it comes to touching or not touching the conference trophy.
Let’s start Vegas. Captain Mark Stone avoided touching the Clarence Campbell Bowl, as he did in 2023 when Vegas defeated the Florida Panthers for the Stanley Cup.

But, in 2018, when the Golden Knights reached the Cup finals in their first season, de facto captain Deryk Engelland not only touched it but picked it up and carried it around.
So, for those keeping score at home, Vegas is 1-1 in the Cup finals, losing when they touch the cup and winning when they don’t.
Now, this is also Carolina’s third trip to the finals in franchise history, the first coming in 2002.

They defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in six games, and captain Ron Francis captured the Prince of Wales Trophy.

In the Finals, they lost to the Detroit Red Wings in five games, but that had less to do with voodoo touching the trophy and more to do with Detroit having one of the best rosters in NHL history.

But, in 2006, after winning Game 7 against the Buffalo Sabres, then-captain Rod Brind’Amour didn’t touch the trophy, and the Canes went on to beat the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup.
Now, in 2026, they’ve moved away from it again, probably because of some ideas from their head coach.
