West Brom could sign the best player from Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn

With James Morrison in charge, life has improved for West Bromwich Albion.

Smear Eric Ramsay’s name next to the Hathorns and it will evoke a chilling spine-chilling response. However, those days are long gone.

Under their former manager, Albion lost just twice, picking up points in 10 of 12 games. Sure, they haven’t been on a dizzying high but if they can enjoy such a run at the start of next season, they will be in the picture for the playoffs by May 2027.

Either way, it can’t be worse than what fans are made to endure in 2025/26.

Good thing they fixed the manager situation and the next order of business is contracts and new signings.

The state of play in West Brom’s transfer business

The Baggies have about a month to decide what is important to their squad for next season as contracts expire at the end of June.

Morrison and Co have already decided not to renew the contracts of Jed Wallace and Daryl Dike and goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith will also leave.

That said, the club is still negotiating with strikers Karlan Grant and Josh Maja to renew their deals at the Hawthorns. At this time, both of them will leave.

Considering they only combined for ten goals last term, perhaps the best call to make is to let them go. However, losing three strikers in one window certainly won’t be a good thing in terms of recruitment.

West Brom’s top scorers in 2025/26

2. Isaac Price

3. Josh Maja

4. George Campbell

5. Karlan Grant

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding Grant and Maja, they need to sign a new midfielder. Former loanee Lewis Dobbin has been put forward as one option, as has Ben Brereton Diaz at Southampton.

The goals have not come often for West Brom this season. The Midlands side have conceded just 48 times, the fourth-worst record in the entire division behind Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford United and Charlton Athletic.

Finding a new striker, however, should not be the only priority.

Where West Brom need to strengthen this summer

All over the field. Is that the right answer? Last season was full of problems and while finding a reliable source of goals is very important, Albion must look to strengthen the midfield.

They are not short of options in that case. Alex Mowatt will no doubt play a key role again and could be paired with Isaac Price or Jayson Molumby in the middle of the park.

That said, Price was selected as a wideout option late last term when Mike Johnston was injured. He is also more of an attacking midfielder than a deep player.

Therefore, it makes sense to raise the ceiling of the team as it will seek promotion. Fortunately, they have already been pointed in the right direction by signing two options to play in the Championship in 2025/26.

The first of which is Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Year, Svante Inelsson. One of the few bright sparks in the Owls side as they lost in League One, he has attracted a lot of attention.

On Wednesday, bids were issued for Millwall and Portsmouth in January and West Brom, Preston North End and Sheffield United are believed to be interested in the player.

As for signing, this would be a great choice. One of the biggest plus points is Ingelsson’s ability to consistently win duels. In the Championship this season, he has won 4.34 per 90 minutes, more than any other Albion midfielder. Price finished the season with 3.51, Molumby registered 4.10 and Mowatt 3.78.

Svante-Ingelsson

It’s safe to say that the latter is better than the Sheffield Wednesday star in terms of attacking threat. Although both scored once, Mowatt finished the term with four more assists than Ingelsson, while accumulating 0.68 shots per 90 minutes to Ingelsson’s 0.48.

It is from a defensive position that the Wednesday man stands for improvement. He scored 1.13 per 90 to Mowatt’s 1.13 and Molumby’s 0.74.

All that said, the Owls star is not the only midfielder to be linked with the Midlands. Last week’s reports revealed that the Baggies are one of the teams monitoring the situation of Sondre Tronstad of Blackburn Rovers who is due to become a free agent in four weeks.

Currently out with an ACL tear, he was described as Rovers’ “best” player by journalist Elliott Jackson at the end of last year, meaning Tronstad will be another key signing for Albion.

Whether they will register or not will be discussed. After all, their main role is as defensive minded players. Either way, you could have an interesting double pivot on your hands here with Mowatt moving forward a bit and Price continuing to play on the wings.

Sandro-Tronstad

The Rovers star was actually better than Ingelsson when it came to duels, winning 5.51 per 90 minutes and making 2.53 tackles per 90. In the defensive area of the game, he is better than any midfielder currently available in Morrison.

While the central midfielder should not be the main focus this summer, if the likes of Ingelsson and Tronstad are available, West Brom must ensure they are in talks to sign them.
