Celtic are working on a deal to make their best signing since Nygren at Parkhead

A mystery. That would be the best word to describe Celtic’s leading goalscorer this season, Benjamin Nygren.
Take the win at Motherwell earlier this month, for example, where the Swede was not successful in many proceedings, looking to withdraw early in the second half.
However, as ever, he stepped up to make the difference, firing home a superb effort on the hour mark, leaving opposition keeper Calum Ward to focus on the spot.
The 24-year-old may divide opinion, but you can’t argue with a return of 16 goals in the Premiership, and 21 in all competitions, not bad for a player who cost just £1.7m last summer.

This is the kind of deal the champions will be looking to repeat this time around.
Celtic are keen to sign the 23-year-old star
It’s been a quick start to the window for Hearts and Rangers, yet it never looked right at Parkhead, with 2025/26 being a flawed season for the Hoops.
The fact that there has yet to be any confirmation of the next manager being hired is also a concern, and that uncertainty may contribute to delays in the initiation of procedures in relation to incoming.
That said, the search for reinforcements looks set to continue anyway, with reports from Bosnia suggesting Celtic’s interest in Brondby midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic.
It is suggested that the Glasgow giants have already begun to work out a deal for the 23-year-old, with ‘huge promise’ likely to begin.
The Bosnian moved to Denmark from Ajax in 2025, with his current club in no rush to sell just yet, especially as his profile could be boosted by a strong World Cup this summer.
Tahirovic may prove to be Celtic’s best player since Nygren
Apart from Nygren and Kieran Tierney, it’s hard to think of too many deals that have really worked out for the club in the last 12 months or so, which makes Martin O’Neill’s double success all the more remarkable.
£5m man Michel Ange Balikwisha did not feature in the league after October, Sebastian Tounekti scored just two Premiership goals all season, and even youngster Iheanacho and Calum Osmand had their own injury problems.
Amidst January’s crop again, a host of the club’s loan signings have all endured their own spells on the sidelines, either through injury or simply exile, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s heroics were quickly forgotten in May.
Too many misses, too few hits up front, although Tahirovic could be another success story, showing Nygren on the Scandinavian trade in Scotland.
Born and raised in Sweden, Nygren, the Bosnian international has been hailed as the “diamond” of talent scout Jacek Kulig, tipped to be a “future leader” for his country in the coming years.
Moves to the likes of Roma and Ajax have not gone down well for the young midfielder, although that speaks volumes for how well he is being snapped up by Europe’s best, now that he has found his feet again in Denmark.
Although he is not a skilled midfielder, he has the ability to lie, having scored a goal and assisted one goal apiece in the Danish Superliga this season, he is a progressive player, who plays the ball in his lying role.
Indeed, in 2024/25, for example, he averaged an impressive 1.3 passes per game, with a passing accuracy rate of 85%.
For context, Callum McGregor, who operates in the same role, has averaged 0.9 key passes in the Premiership this season, although he boasts a much higher accuracy rate of 93%.
Looking back at Amsterdam too, Tahirovic really finished the 2023/24 campaign with six goals and assists, an 89% pass accuracy rate and an average of 2.3 tackles and blocks per game, showing that there are plenty of strings to his bow.
He is an attractive player, towering at 6 foot 3, who could be the man to revitalize Celtic’s midfield with a real injection of physicality, something that is not well served by Reo Hatate’s or Arne Engels’ men at the moment.
Making the switch from Scandinavia, as Nygren did last year, he was able to see Tahirovic flourish on his own in Glasgow, with this exciting young talent who could raise the bar at Parkhead.
Let’s be honest, the club can do another success story for the players after such a long period of misery in this department.

Celtic could see a £9m bid accepted to sign a better player than Engels
Celtic are reportedly interested in signing a star who could be better than Arne Engels.
