The United States has arrested the sister of the president of GAESA, an organization full of military-run businesses in Cuba, because of alleged collaboration with the Communist regime.
GAESA was cited in reports that it diverted millions in aid intended for the Cuban people “at the behest of the regime,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a post on Thursday.
Adys Lasts Morera was taken into ICE custody after the State Department revoked his lawful permanent resident (LPR) status, according to Rubio.
Mora, who ran a real estate business while living in Florida, reportedly helped the communist government in Havana, officials said.

The termination of his status was done at Rubio’s discretion. Mora entered the United States as a legal citizen in 2023, Reuters reported.
“Today, Adys Lasts Morera, a native of Cuba and a collaborator with the Communist regime in Havana, was arrested following the Department of State’s legal termination of his legal residency (LPR), on my orders,” Rubio said.

Mora is the older sister of Ania Guillermina Lasts Morera, who was punished earlier this month for her role as the executive president of GAESA.
GAESA has been described by officials as an exploitative communist organization that takes resources from the Cuban people.

“While the Cuban people suffer from the collapse of Cuba’s defunct Communist economy, GAESA is working to allow a handful of regime leaders to loot all of the island’s remaining resources, siphoning off an estimated $20 billion in illicit cash from hidden offshore accounts,” Rubio said.
He added that Ania Guillermina Lasts Morera, as CEO, is responsible for managing international assets that are said to be used to support the “luxurious lifestyle” of the Castro-era elite, as well as supporting efforts related to the wider influence of ideas abroad.

Rubio also pointed to worsening conditions inside Cuba, including widespread power outages and severe shortages of food, fuel, and medicine, saying GAESA is diverting resources away from basic needs under the communist system.
“GAESA’s ill-gotten wealth is not spent on repairing the collapsing power grid, maintaining empty pharmacies, feeding hungry families, or providing the basic and essential needs of the Cuban people. Instead, it is used to enrich Havana’s elite and underwrite their ongoing espionage, subversion, and revolutionary hemis militancy.
