Musician Tom Morello faced criticism from conservatives after performing for the crowd on Tuesday at the Hands off NYC protest at Federal Plaza in Manhattan.
The guitarist, known for Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, sang Woodie Guthrie’s song, “This Land is Your Land,” along with the lines: “In the town square, in the shadow of the castle, by the aid office, I see my people.”
A cheering crowd carrying “Hands off NYC” and “ICE is illegal” signs sang along with the 61-year-old.
“My mom and I used to live at 142nd and Riverside a long time ago,” Morello told the crowd, according to Rolling Stone. “My brothers and sisters, if I’ve learned one thing in all my years since then, it’s that if it looks like fascism, sounds like fascism, dresses like fascism, talks like fascism, kills like fascism, and lies like fascism – my brothers and sisters, if–ing fascism.”

He also called the Trump administration “a show of authorized tyranny” and called for a “massive anti-fascist crime-fighting movement.”
A video of Morello’s performance posted on X received a lot of negative comments.

The third said: “Now he’s angry at the machine and pretending to be angry… you know?” another said: “Making money from America’s downfall.”

“Honestly sad. Tom Morello is a bully trying to stay relevant,” wrote a fifth. “I bet every terrorist Gen Zers in the crowd has no idea who he is or what he really stands for. It’s so sad to see what has happened to our culture.”

However, he got a lot of support on Instagram.
“Thank you Tom Morello and New York! Appreciate your support for immigrants,” wrote one commenter. “One of my favorites Woody Guthrie sings. Great songs. Keep up the good work. Finally, we will get rid of the train of Trump and cronies in power and get the country on a better path toward justice for all, citizens and immigrants alike.”

“thanks tom! Good message!” one said, and the third wrote: “The song represents us people youd–n right it is our soul. Thank you for sharing.”
“Keep singing, keep protesting!” one urged, and the fifth said: “This is very good.”

Morello also played a match with fellow President Donald Trump who criticizes Bruce Springsteen on Monday night at Madison Square Garden.
