Referee Darren Sarginson stopped the fight after Chelli pinned Morrell against the ropes and landed a series of heavy punches that left the Cuban heavily injured in the closing stages of the contest.
Morrell came out on the move to win the decision for most of the fight. The Cuban southpaw controlled the length with his jab, movement, and sharp combinations while using his reach advantage to prevent Chelli from getting frequent offense during the early and middle rounds.
Chelli Stayed Competitive
Chelli continued to push forward even though he appeared behind on the scorecards entering the final stage. The British fighter mixed body shots, occasional counters, and hard pressure while trying to force Morrell to trade.
While Morrell looked sharp throughout most of the fight, Chelli never stopped pushing the pace and gradually found opportunities late on.
Dramatic Finish
The fight took a sudden turn during the final round when Chelli connected with several heavy punches that appeared to hurt Morrell. Chelli quickly attacked, backing Morrell into the ropes before cornering him under pressure.
Morrell appeared unable to fully recover as Chelli continued to land shots, forcing referee Sarginson to step in and stop the fight at 2:24 of Round 10.
The stoppage was the biggest win of Chelli’s professional career and a huge setback for Morrell, who entered the fight as a heavy favorite and one of the most highly regarded contenders in the light heavyweight division.
A Huge Momentum Shift
Morrell was trying to rebuild momentum after losing to David Benavidez last year. Instead, the defeat leaves fresh questions about his position in the division after he lost another blow in a fight that many expected him to win comfortably.
For Chelli, an upset win could dramatically change his standing in the light heavyweight division following a career-defining performance in front of his home crowd.
