West Brom could replace Ramsay by appointing Corberan 2.0 as their new manager

When you think West Bromwich Albion have collapsed under Eric Ramsay, they seem to be sinking into the depths of misery.

Yes, it would have been fair to expect the Baggies to win at the weekend, as they welcomed Championship leaders, Coventry City, to the Hawthorns, but that doesn’t take away from how dark the 2-0 defeat was, as the hosts who were in danger of being relegated ended the painful story with just one shot on target.

Ramsay appears to be a dead man for the second team, with zero wins so far from eight games in charge, pushing West Brom forward and into the dreaded relegation picture.

With reports emerging that the former Minnesota United manager’s future at the club remains in serious doubt, who would West Brom look to pick to salvage their season?

However, there are several managerial targets reportedly in mind if Ramsay is finally put out of his misery…

Who can West Brom replace Ramsay with?

Ramsay exuded a sense of defiance in his post-match comments, but according to Lewis Cox of the Express and Star, there is “a lot of pressure” on the former Wales assistant manager, now that he is expected to be sacked.

West Brom could go down a more experienced route to replace Ramsay, with the rookie manager out of his depth when it comes to the Championship, with the out-of-work Sean Dyche said to be on the Baggies’ radar.

After all, Dyche even won the Championship title as a manager in the past, and is familiar with the dramas of fighting relegation in the Premier League.

Furthermore, at the end of January, it was thought that Russell Martin was willing to return to the managerial horse with West Brom, with the former Southampton boss another exit option that will certainly be considered, if Ramsay is given the boot.

However, West Brom could appear to be too in on a quick move for the 34-year-old, with claims in the past 48 hours suggesting that Baggies legend James Morrison could be given the reins on a temporary basis as well, if the sacking is possible.

The woeful West Midlands club need love and experience from the players, and with Morrison’s reputation as the Hawthorns’ most-loved midfielder on his side, he could turn out to be the Baggies’ next Carlos Corberan if all goes well.

How Morrison can be Corberan 2.0

West Brom have never really recovered from Corberan packing his bags for Valencia in the 2023/24 season, and the Baggies have gone from promotion contenders under the Spaniard to relegation contenders this season and now.

Rather than chop and change, however, West Brom will need this next appointment to settle down, and that could come in the form of Morrison being given the job permanently, as the 39-year-old knows the West Midlands outfit inside and out, having made 341 appearances as a favorite at the Hawthorns.

Of course, he will need to back up his iconic status at the club – which saw Tony Pulis say he had “blue and white stripes” running around him – with much-improved play on the pitch, with a Corberan-esque overhaul perhaps needed to get the broken fans back on the sidelines.

When Corberan entered the building for the 2022/23 season, West Brom were in the relegation zone, only for the former Huddersfield Town manager to turn the club’s fortunes around, with a total of 45 league wins for the Baggies that saw a major play-off take place during the 2023/24 campaign.

It will be a tough task on Morrison’s shoulders to make the dramatic changes if he is to step into a post-Ramsay environment, but he will look to Corberan’s story for inspiration as he looks for a senior management gig, for the 42-year-old and second-in-command at United of Leeds.

After learning the likes of Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road, Corberan was ready to burst into life as a head coach, with Morrison’s long list of managers he worked with at the Baggies, in many different coaching roles, no doubt helping him on his coaching journey.

Morrison even rivaled Corberan for 46 games at West Brom, with the Scotsman also working alongside the likes of Steve Bruce and veteran Sam Allardyce at the Hawthorns.

While he was given a temporary gig earlier, he has been brilliant again, unbeaten in two games last season, when everything was in the balance following Tony Mowbray.

It would be a bold next step, but with all the failures that have occurred in recent times, taking a chance on an “unsung” club legend – as former West Brom manager Steve Clarke once called him – could prove to be smart.
