Ted Danson shares some of the compromises he had to make for his wife.

In a recent episode of his podcast, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” with Adam Scott, the topic of Speedos came up. Scott said he felt “embarrassed” about being seen in his Speedo as a junior in high school, prompting Danson to share that he was “proud of my Speedos.”

The 78-year-old actor shared that he wore Speedos for “about 10 years” before meeting his wife, actress Mary Steenburgen.

“When I started wearing them when we were together and my children were together on vacation, all the children ended up together,” he said. “And Mary looked at me and said, ‘No.’ And my daughters go, ‘Oh, thank you. Thank you so much for saying no to his Speedo.’

In the end, the “Cheers” star was able to admit that it was “the right move” to prevent her from wearing Speedos, with Scott praising Steenburgen’s creativity.

Danson and Steenburgen first met in 1993 while on the set of the movie “Pontiac Moon” and quickly became one of the most popular couples in Hollywood. They got married in October 1995 in a ceremony held on Martha’s Vineyard.

Speaking to actor Don Cheadle on an episode of his podcast in March, Danson shared that Steenburgen helped him realize that despite “going there wanting to be raised and loving and kind,” he can sometimes be a “d—.”

“He said, ‘You’re as mean as a backyard dog,’ and it was the first time I’d ever heard that phrase. And I thought it was a stupid thing to say about me,” he said. “Fortunately I’ve grown and developed in my relationship with Mary to realize, ‘Oh yeah, I’ve got that,’ which is good to know that both of you.”

The couple has worked together many times over the years, most recently on the second season of the hit Netflix show, “Man on the Inside,” where Steenburgen joined the show as the love interest of Danson’s character.

In an episode of his podcast in June 2025, Danson shared what it was like to have his wife as a guest, Brett Goldstein, noting that he felt “part of my job is to host my wife” as he joined her on his show.

“If he’s not having a good time, I’m an a-hole,” he said. “And that’s up to me.”

The experience ended up being good for both of them, Danson shared that they fell in love again while filming their scenes.

“Oh, it’s just magic. We’re in love. The story changes, but I’m just in love with her and sitting there on camera and looking into your wife’s eyes …. And we’re madly in love in private and to just disappear from her eyes in front of the camera is so amazing,” Danson said.

He later talked about what it’s like to work with his wife on this show during an interview on “Namuhla”, admitting that he is married made it easier for him to record emotional scenes.

“It’s easy for me because I don’t worry about love scenes with people I don’t know — actors,” Danson said. “No, but it’s also true. You feel guilty and uncomfortable and it’s not right,” he added after the host joked that “it’s a good answer sitting next to your wife.”
