Spurs will sign a Premier League star who could be their next captain after Romero

Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur, Roberto De Zerbi. Time to have fun, right? Right…? Think again.
Although there have been signs of struggle under the Italian, leading against Brighton and almost winning last Sunday, it would not be the worst start since he became Spurs manager.
A few days after his arrival, he faced the problem that Mohammed Kudus will miss the whole season. In his first game in charge, he was forced to replace his captain, Cristian Romero.
The Argentinian player is one of those who was considered not to play this season, which left the team without another key player. Their injury luck this season has been absolutely shocking.
What is the future of Cristian Romero at Tottenham
Say what you like about Romero’s misbehavior, his social media statements and his behavior on the field. This is a fighter, a warrior, a South American fighter who is exactly the kind of character you want on your side when the going gets tough.
For Spurs, this is not just another injury. Losing their captain in the situation they did is a bitter pill to swallow.
Against Sunderland, striker Brian Brobbey pushed Argentina straight at Antonin Kinsky, only for the defender to sit down.
It was later confirmed that Romero had torn part of his medial cruciate ligament. He left the field in tears, it is understandable that this is the case as his hopes for the World Cup are still in doubt.
Speaking last weekend, De Zerbi was full of sympathy for him, he said: “First of all, Romero loves Tottenham, people should know that he is suffering from this injury, suffering because he will not play for us again this season. He is a great captain for us.”

Even if the defender loves Spurs, there is a good chance he will play his last game for the club, especially if they lose in the Championship.
If they have to sit down, it is clear that their chances of keeping the captaincy increase. However, this is a player who has attracted many people in the past. He has not only caught the attention of Real Madrid in the past but recent rumors reveal that Manchester United have considered establishing their own club to keep him in English football.
For Spurs fans, that would be the worst possible scenario.
If Romero leaves, finding another captain will be key.
How Spurs can replace the leadership of Cristian Romero
Honestly, the Lilywhites are not blessed with leadership options at all. Once James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski return, as long as they do, they will be looked upon to inspire continuity on the pitch.
Conor Gallagher could have been a candidate as his time at the club got off to a good start. Archie Gray could be captain in the future.
The most obvious replacement would be defender Micky van de Ven but what if Spurs could actually dip their toes in the transfer market to replace Romero?
Well, it may not be a like-for-like replacement but the addition of Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson could help fill the leadership void left when the Argentine moves from north London.

Where does Andy Robertson rank?
Spurs looked to sign the Scotland defender in the winter but he ended up staying to see out his contract at Anfield. He has confirmed he will leave on a free transfer in the summer and, as long as Tottenham stay, they are in a good position to sign him.
Fabrizio Romano revealed at the weekend: “(Robertson) will join Tottenham if they stay in the Premier League. According to my knowledge, there is already an agreement on everything between Robertson and Tottenham.”
These are exciting times in terms of transfers, but at 32, what can the Scot offer Spurs?
However, the winner of the Premier League and the Champions League, will bring a high mentality with him, an experience that very few have in De Zerbi’s team.
Sure his power may be waning as he nears the end of his career but he is one of the most reliable players in the top flight of English football and has been for a long time. Jose Mourinho, i Jose Mourinho, hailed him as an “unbelievable” player.
Only one defender in Premier League history has more assists (60) than Robertson. He was replaced by former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold (64).

Boasting a stunning left foot, it is undoubtedly his leadership qualities that make him an outstanding signing if they do.
The veteran left-back is Scotland’s captain and has been since 2018. He has worn the belt more than 49 times for his country, underscoring what a strong character he is.
Of course, Spurs will need an outgoing defender to replace Romero but they will also need someone who can take over the captaincy. Robertson could be just the man for that.

Tottenham are still stuck in the relegation zone after dropping points late on against Brighton.
