Democratic Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy is under fire after posting a single word on social media fueling accusations that he is a “traitor” congratulating the United States during the war in Iran.
“Amazing,” Murphy wrote in X in response to a post reporting that 26 ships of Iran’s shadow fleet had passed the US blockade in the Gulf of Oman.
Murphy’s post added to his long-standing criticism of President Donald Trump’s foreign policy and renewed scrutiny of his previous stance on Iran, giving critics new ammunition to cast the Connecticut Democrat as hostile to US interests.
Commenters on social media poured out this message to Murphy, some asking if his account had been “hacked” and others accusing him of congratulating Iran.

Fox News foreign affairs reporter Trey Yingst famously told “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday morning that there is “no evidence” that Iranian ships, ships used to evade international sanctions, have passed the US embargo.
Murphy’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on X’s post and whether his message was intended to be serious or humorous.
“The tweet was sarcastic. Chris obviously thinks it’s bad that Donald Trump continues to mismanage all aspects of the war he started but clearly has no plan to end it,” Murphy’s spokesperson told Jewish Insider on Monday.
Commentators continued to criticize Murphy on X Tuesday morning.
“This is what TDS looks like of late: Congratulating Iran for defeating the US Navy,” the Trump War room account wrote.
“This US Senate is publicly congratulating America’s wartime enemy. The Senate should vote to impeach him,” commented Mike Davis, founder and President of the Article III Project.

As the Trump administration pressures Iran to curb its nuclear program, the US is using its naval and air power to choke Iranian shipping around the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
Murphy recently called Trump’s positions related to the war with Iran “a clear war crime.”
