Newcastle are now aiming to sign the Tottenham star as Lange sets a £35m price tag

Newcastle are reportedly pushing to sign the Tottenham star as Eddie Howe’s side look to capitalize on their relegation worries.
Newcastle face high-flying Bournemouth this afternoon
Before the Magpies can think about who will come in, they have to finish the season in one piece.
Howe’s side welcome Bournemouth to St James’ Park this afternoon on the back of a three-game losing streak in all competitions, a run that has left Tyneside tense and the pressure on their manager mounting by the week.
They sit 14th in the Premier League and have dropped more points from winning positions than any other season this season, a poor pattern that will define a campaign that promised so much.
Newly promoted Sunderland are expected to finish above them as things stand, which comes as a stark reality in itself.
Bournemouth comes in stark contrast.
Newcastle have offered the former Tottenham manager who said he almost joined as an assistant
Eddie Howe has been in the spotlight this season.
Andoni Iraola’s side are on a 12-game unbeaten run, and are unbeaten in their last six Premier League games against Newcastle.
Optics may not be too bad for Howe, but a real storm may be brewing.
As the season draws to a close, Newcastle’s management are already eyeing a major summer overhaul – and they may have to rebuild from scratch.
Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães and Tino Livramento are all set to leave St James’ Park this summer, while Kieran Trippier has confirmed he will leave the club.
That’s an awful lot of quality to change in one window, and the recruiting team will have their work cut out for them.
Newcastle are ‘pushing’ to sign Conor Gallagher from Tottenham
One name they are actively pursuing, according to SportsBoom, is Conor Gallagher.
Sources have told the newspaper that Newcastle are ‘pushing’ to sign the 26-year-old England midfielder, and will rekindle long-term interest.
The conspiracy here is partly circumstantial.
Gallagher only signed for Tottenham in January for around £35 million, joining Atlético Madrid where he spent 18 months.
At Atlético, he made 77 appearances in all competitions and scored seven goals, before returning to England and signing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Since arriving at Spurs, he has not been very successful, and it is believed that technical director Johan Lange and his colleagues now want to recoup the money they paid Gallagher if Newcastle make a move.
In other words, they will sell for £35m.
If Spurs are relegated from the Championship, the north London club are set for a massive exit, and have resigned to losing Gallagher amid the move.
Aston Villa, who were keen on Gallagher before Spurs cut and hijacked their deal, are also said to be monitoring the situation.
For Newcastle, signing the England international and former Chelsea captain who made 136 Premier League appearances before moving to Spain would be a sensible move.
Whether it’s enough to justify the scale of next summer’s rebuild is another question entirely.
